After graduating with a degree in knitwear (fashion and textiles) from Winchester School of Art in 2018, I moved back
to my hometown Penzance in West Cornwall. Keeping my combined love of design, fashion and the creation of textiles alive, the brand Jessye Boulton Knitwear came about organically in 2019.
From my rural studio a few miles outside Penzance, I craft tactile, luxurious pieces of knitwear inspired by the juxtaposing rugged, dramatic land and seascapes of surrounding West Cornwall. The colours, patterns and textures evident in my work are often subtly reflective of the natural world observed around me, and a respect for the spaces and places we inhabit influence my practice as a designer/maker, helping determine the use of only natural, sustainable fibres, which are breathable and biodegrable by nature.
The making of each unique garment or accessory embraces time, skill and precision, resulting in refined pieces of knitwear
that are often individual by nature. Embracing small scale, local production, I use vintage industrial knitting machines to hand craft both garments and accessories, harnessing artisan techniques and traditional skills. Developed using luxury natural yarns for instance silk, wool or mohair, pieces are made using these hand powered knitting machinery in a way that uses little or zero waste. The ethos of slow fashion is at the heart of my practice, with each piece designed and made with longevity in mind.
Working with demand to only produce what is needed, garments and accessories are made in limited quantities, adding to the bespoke nature of the designs. Garments are often made to order and are fully fashioned (shaped to size) on the machine and accessories are made in small batches to fit with demand. Items are then hand finished and washed to bring out the beautiful yarn qualities. Like this, waste is minimised and each product is finished to a high standard ensuring durability and longevity.
